The Art of Hand Block Printing
Hand block printing is a traditional technique of printing widely used in Asia. This artform is one the oldest methods of fabric printing. Indian handblock printing is much sought after on cotton and silk.
Origin & History
Woodblock Printing is an ancient artform, with its earliest surviving examples being fragments silk printed flowers in three colours from the of Han Dynasty (before AD 220). Woodblock printing was prevalent during the Tang Dynasty era in 7th century AD and remained the most common East Asian method of printing books and other texts as well as images until the 19th century.
Historians believe, the art of wood block printing travelled along the silk route. During the Mughal era somewhere between the 15th and 17th Century, artisans started settled in modern day India in the states of Rajasthan and Gujarat and made it their home. Today, the art of handblock printing is a globally renowned Indian Cottage Industry that uses carved blocks to create patterns on cloth.

The expertise of the artisan can be seen the actual design in the overlaying of colours on the fabric to complete a pattern.
